How Our Decaf Coffee Is Made

We use carefully selected decaffeination methods, including Swiss Water®, Mountain Water, CO₂, and traditional solvent-based processes, chosen based on the coffee and the flavour profile we want to preserve.

Each method is designed to remove caffeine while protecting the coffee’s natural oils and structure. This helps retain balance, aroma, and depth, rather than stripping the coffee of its character.

The result is decaffeinated coffee that still tastes like coffee — smooth, rounded, and satisfying, without harsh, thin, or hollow flavours.

Frequently Asked Questions about Decaf Coffee

How is decaffeinated coffee made?

Decaffeinated coffee is made by removing caffeine from green (unroasted) coffee beans before roasting. We use a range of carefully selected processes — including Swiss Water®, Mountain Water, CO₂, and traditional solvent-based methods — depending on the coffee and the flavour profile we want to preserve.

Does decaf coffee still contain caffeine?

Yes, but only a very small amount. Decaffeinated coffee typically contains around 97–99% less caffeine than regular coffee. The exact level can vary depending on the coffee and the decaffeination method used.

Does decaf coffee taste different from regular coffee?

Modern decaffeination methods are designed to preserve flavour, aroma, and body. While decaf coffee can taste slightly different from its fully caffeinated counterpart, a well-processed and freshly roasted decaf should still taste balanced, smooth, and recognisably like coffee — not thin or hollow.

Which decaffeination method is best?

There isn’t one single “best” method. Different processes suit different coffees. Water-based methods like Swiss Water® and Mountain Water focus on gentle caffeine removal, while CO₂ and solvent-based methods can be effective at preserving structure and body. We choose the method that best suits each coffee rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

Can I use decaf coffee for espresso?

Yes. Many decaf coffees work well for espresso, although they may behave slightly differently during extraction. Adjusting grind size and dose can help achieve the best results, just as with any coffee.

Is decaf coffee suitable for all brewing methods?

Decaf coffee can be brewed using a wide range of methods, including espresso machines, bean to cup machines, cafetières, and filter brewing. As with any coffee, results depend on grind size, brewing method, and personal preference.

How fresh is your decaffeinated coffee?

All our decaf coffees are roasted to order and dispatched fresh, so they reach you at their best rather than sitting on a shelf for weeks.
