If you already own a Moccamaster , you’ll know it’s not just any coffee machine. Handmade in the Netherlands, it brews coffee at the ideal temperature range (92–96°C), ensures even saturation of the grounds, and completes the process in just 4–6 minutes. But even the best brewer needs the best coffee beans.
So, what coffee should you be using? In this post, we’ll walk you through three of our best coffees for the Moccamaster. We’ll also share a tried-and-tested brew recipe , origin insights, and tasting notes to help you get the most from every cup.
Why the Right Coffee Matters for Moccamaster Brewing
The Moccamaster is known for brewing at the ideal temperature (between 92–96°C) and giving the coffee grounds an even saturation, which means it’s brilliant at bringing out subtle flavours. It’s especially good with medium-dark roasts — the kind that are sweet, balanced, and a bit complex.

How to Brew Coffee in Moccamaster (Our Go-To Recipe)
Whether you're brewing a morning carafe or a midday pick-me-up, this simple method gives consistently great results:
What you’ll need:
- Coffee: 60g of freshly ground beans (enough for 1L of water)
Grind size: Filter (similar to table salt)
Water: 1L of filtered or soft water
Paper filter (No. 4) – rinse it first to remove any papery taste
How to brew:
Rinse the paper filter with hot water and discard the rinse water.
Add your ground coffee to the filter basket.
Fill the reservoir with 1 litre of filtered water.
Start the machine and let the Moccamaster do the rest — total brew time is usually around 5–6 minutes.
Stir the coffee once brewing finishes for an even cup.
Serving tip: All three coffees below are delicious black, but also hold up nicely with milk or oat milk depending on your taste.

A Few Extra Tips for Brewing with the Moccamaster
Grind fresh : Your coffee will taste way better if you grind your beans just before brewing.
Stick to the golden ratio : Around 60g of coffee per litre of water is a good place to start.
Use soft or filtered water : Hard tap water can flatten the flavour.
Clean your Moccamaster : Old oils and limescale can dull your brew. A regular rinse and the odd descaling go a long way.
