Chemex Brewing Guide
Using the pour over method is a great way to brew freshly ground coffee at home. These methods are becoming an increasingly popular option for both home enthusiasts and baristas. One extremely stylish way of using this method is with a Chemex. In this blog we will be looking at how to brew using a chemex to ensure delicious coffee every time!
The Chemex combines a pour over filter cone with a stylish glass decanter. The defining feature of this method is an ultra-thick paper filter set against the walls.
What you need
Chemex 3-Cup glass coffee maker, Chemex paper filters, Redber freshly roasted filter ground coffee (around 12-16 grams for one cup) & a Kettle.
How to Use
- Place the filter into the top of your Chemex. When placing the filter in the Chemex, be sure to have the side with three layers against the spout.
- Start by thoroughly rinsing the filter with hot water. (This will preheat the Chemex and rinse out any kind of papery taste in the filter) You can then pour out this water that was used for rinsing out into your sink.
- Add around 28g of filter ground coffee and even the bed.
- Use hot water to evenly wet all of the coffee, and then start a timer.
- After 30-45 seconds pour the rest of the water in a slow and controlled motion. Aim to finish pouring at around 3 minutes.
- Toss the filter and grounds, give the Chemex a few swirls, and serve.
The Chemex is particularly distinctive for its heavy filters. These result in a high clarity, light body coffee, with very distinct flavours, relative to other pourovers.
