Old Brown Java works particularly well for espresso, producing a smooth, heavy-bodied shot with rich crema and earthy chocolate depth. It is also highly suited to bean-to-cup coffee machines and moka pots.

Its low acidity and darker roast profile also make it an excellent choice for milk-based drinks such as cappuccinos and flat whites.

Traditional Aged Java Coffee

Old Brown Java is inspired by the historic aged coffees once transported from Indonesia to Europe on long sea voyages. During ageing, the beans gradually lose acidity while developing deeper earthy, woody and spicy characteristics. This traditional style of coffee remains popular for its smooth texture, heavy body and rich flavour profile.

Unlike brighter fruit-led speciality coffees, Old Brown Java focuses on depth, body and smoothness, making it especially suited to espresso drinkers and darker roast coffee lovers.

OBJ Coffee Profile

This Indonesian speciality coffee is roasted dark to enhance its rich chocolate notes, smoky spice character and syrupy body while maintaining smoothness and balance. Its naturally low acidity makes it particularly approachable for those who prefer fuller-bodied coffee with less brightness.

I do love a strong cup of OBJ - and this did not

I do love a strong cup of OBJ - and this did not disappoint. Beautifully roasted, with a deep earhty, smoky taste. Highly recommended - I've gone through this like a train!

Great taste but grind too coarse

Old Brown Java - Dark Roast is my favourite Redber espresso coffee so far. I usually buy beans to grind myself but thought I'd try espresso grind for a change. The grind is too coarse for my Gaggia and it is better suited to a Moka pot, which I have been using. Will go back to grinding my own next time. So 5* for the coffee but 1* for the fineness of the grind.

Difficult to dial in

As a straight up espresso, these beans were very difficult to dial in on my Sette 270. Just when I thought I had nailed my grind, the follow up drinks flowed too fast with rapid blonding no matter what I did. At best I managed 40g in 30seconds which is completely off my usual ratio.

The taste is still very good, with very dark chocolate hints along with a smokiness. I highly doubt I'll purchase again because the beans are quite oily out of the bag so I don't want to gum up my grinder.

Excellent, faultless delivery from Redber as usual :)

Too strong for me

Won't be buying again, but it does make a decent noisette.

Espresso?

Not a very best experience with these beens for an espresso shot. They maybe more suitable for other methods. Lots of foaming when pulling the shot (similar to stretching the milk) with about 40-45% of the volume even after being left for 10days after the roasting. Also, blonding very quickly during the extraction.

strong and dark

Have not ordered this bean for sometime, had forgotten just how strong, dark with a lovely finish it was. A perfect cup to get you started in the morning, or to refresh you later in the day.

First time buyer’s experience

I was looking for a coffee bean supplier/roaster locally for a gift for a friend. Although Redber are not the nearest, they offer a comprehensive range and easy to use website, so they got the order which was delivered exactly as promised and as described. The friend is delighted with the gift, I will return on my own account

First coffee purchase

I've been used to buying from Whitards, but thought I'd try someone different as they have raised their delivery cost threshold.

Delivery of these items took 8 days, which is too long in my opinion, even taking the petrol issue into account. I received no delivery updates.

I'm also not sure the coffee is of the same high grade. I submitted a customer query and received no reply.

Overall, I'm unlikely to buy from this site again.

My new go to

I recently decided I was going to start buying nice coffees, and figured I'd shop around a few different brewers as part of that. Then I made the mistake of picking up a bag of Old Brown Java from Redber as my first pick. It's rich, full, smooth, lovely with a splash of oat milk or black on its own, without being hard on an empty stomach, as I tend to only have coffee in the mornings. While I have tried a few other beans, either by choice, or by the lovely sample packs Redber keeps sending me codes for, I've already put a second order in for Old Brown Java, and, starting to see the bottom of that bag peak through, am having a serious discussion with myself over trying something new or picking it up again.

A great, strong, dark coffee.

Not too bitter, but robust and full of strong, nuanced flavours. Almost savoury sometimes, a little smokey, very rich and satisfying. Perfect with something sweet.

And just as an overall review of Redber themselves: they are amazing. Prompt delivery, freshly roasted beans or ground to order. Every coffee I've had from them has been delicious and different, I cannot recommend them enough and if they ever close down I will cry a lot.

A blend we really like

We would not usually choose a blend, but having tried a few, we came back to this particular one. Of the blends, this is our favourite, it has consistent taste and grind, I buy a kilo of this and one of the Colombia Huila, dark roast our two favourite espresso coffees from Redber.
