What Makes Monsooned Malabar Coffee Unique?

Monsooned Malabar is one of the world’s most distinctive coffees. After harvesting, the green coffee beans are exposed to humid monsoon winds along India’s Malabar Coast for several weeks, causing the beans to swell, soften and develop their signature low-acidity profile.

This traditional monsooning process creates a coffee with heavy body, earthy depth and smooth texture, often showing notes of spice, dark chocolate, tobacco, nuts and wood. Its unusually mellow acidity makes Monsooned Malabar especially popular with espresso drinkers and those who prefer fuller-bodied coffees.

Who Will Enjoy Monsooned Malabar?

Monsooned Malabar is ideal for coffee drinkers who prefer low acidity, fuller body and earthy flavour profiles over brighter fruit-led coffees. It is especially popular among espresso drinkers, dark roast enthusiasts and customers looking for smooth coffee with minimal bitterness.

Traditional Monsooning Process

During the monsooning process, coffee beans are stored in open-sided warehouses along India’s Malabar Coast and exposed to seasonal monsoon winds and humidity. This traditional method changes both the physical appearance and flavour profile of the coffee, creating its distinctive smoothness, low acidity and earthy depth.

What is Monsooned Malabar coffee?

Monsooned Malabar is a speciality Indian coffee that undergoes a traditional monsooning process along the Malabar Coast. During this process, green coffee beans are exposed to humid monsoon winds for several weeks, creating a smooth, low-acidity coffee with heavy body and earthy character.

Why is Monsooned Malabar low in acidity?

The monsooning process reduces the coffee’s natural acidity by exposing the beans to moisture-rich monsoon air. This softens the flavour profile and creates a smoother, fuller-bodied cup with very little sharpness or brightness.

Is Monsooned Malabar good for espresso?

Yes, Monsooned Malabar is particularly popular for espresso. Its heavy body, low acidity and rich crema make it ideal for espresso machines and bean-to-cup coffee machines, especially for those who prefer bold, smooth coffee.

Why are Monsooned Malabar beans pale?

During the monsooning process, the beans absorb moisture and expand in size, causing them to develop a pale golden colour rather than the typical green appearance of unroasted coffee beans.

Is Monsooned Malabar speciality coffee?

Yes, Monsooned Malabar can be speciality grade coffee when carefully sourced and processed. Its unique monsooning method, distinctive flavour profile and consistent quality make it one of the world’s most recognisable speciality Indian coffees.

What does Monsooned Malabar taste like?

Monsooned Malabar is known for its earthy, smoky and spicy flavour profile, often showing notes of dark chocolate, tobacco, nuts and wood. It has very low acidity, heavy body and a long, smooth finish.

Is Monsooned Malabar strong coffee?

Monsooned Malabar is often perceived as strong because of its heavy body and bold flavour profile. While caffeine levels are similar to other Arabica coffees, its earthy depth and low acidity create a rich, intense coffee experience.

Which brewing method suits Monsooned Malabar best?

Monsooned Malabar works especially well for espresso machinesbean-to-cup coffee machines, moka pots and cafetieres. Its smooth, low-acidity profile is particularly suited to espresso and milk-based drinks.

Amazing coffee!!!

This is an amazing coffee. It is strong, earthy and deep so you really have to like that style but I love it. I have had MM from Waitrose in the past and whilst it is pretty good this is on another level. Obviously all coffee is expensive right now so I opted for the 1kg option to reduce cost/kg. It was delivered very quickly. Its not as cheap as Waitrose but in my opinion is worth paying the extra for.

Majestic Malabar!

I must be on my 9th 1kg order of this bean. It's far and away my favourite coffee ever. This Dark roast is a totally different flavour to the medium roast which i once ordered in error. Im terrified to risk anything else now incase it dosent come up to scratch. Good service from the Redber team but I wish postage wasn't 20% of the cost.

Lighter roast and more acidic

Have been buying Malabar dark roast for the past few years and always found it a great 5 star brew, sadly the last batch (March 2025) is lighter in colour and even after a few weeks shows little oil, it required a much finer grind to extract any body and the taste was very acidic - interesting that the current description has moved it from low to medium acidity. I'm trying a few alternatives until the 'low acidity' notice returns!

Strong

Always go back to this coffee. Strong, bold, smokey and slightly spicy. Makes a great espresso/espresso based drinks. French press makes a nice strong, rich cup of coffee. Filter coffee works well too if you want a cleaner tasting cup

Very oily, blocked the machine

I have had this coffee before and was really good. This time the beans were of different colours and very oily, too the point of it being visible on every one. I queried this, with no response till I rang, then no answer to the variation and oil. And did it matter? Well it blocked the machine at least 6 times so I removed them in case it completely broke the machine. Poor beans, poor response

nice taste but oily beans makes grinding difficult.

Tastes very nice but the beans are very oily out of the bag and my grinder does not grind them properly as a result. Wouldn't recommend for automatic grinders.
