What is Caffeine?

Caffeine is a natural stimulant found in coffee beans, tea leaves, and cocoa beans. It is the most widely consumed psychoactive substance in the world and is what gives coffee its energizing properties.

Robusta vs Arabica

The type of coffee can determine the amount of caffeine in your cup. A study from 2019 found that Robusta beans have twice the amount of caffeine as Arabica. On average, Robusta contains 2.7% caffeine, whereas Arabica generally has 1.5%.

Espresso methods extract the most  caffeine  for a few reasons. Firstly, the  espresso  method requires the finest grind, which means there is more contact between the coffee and water. Secondly, the pressure pushes more compounds out into the water.  Caffeine Content in Coffee Types and Brewing Methods  provides insight into how brewing methods affect caffeine extraction.

Caffeine Content in Brewing Methods: Serving Size

However, we need to take into account the serving size of each type of brewing method.

The approx. caffeine content for each brewing method

Brewing Method Typical Serving Size Caffeine Content Per Serving
Espresso 30ml 76.2mg
Cold Brew 120ml 102mg
Stove Top 40ml 60.96mg
Cafetiere 120ml 118.8mg
AeroPress 120ml 93.6mg
Drip 120ml 71.76mg

Based on these calculations, the cafetière method actually comes out as the highest dose of caffeine per serve with almost 120mg followed by the cold brew.

Do Different Roasts Have Different Levels of Caffeine?

The caffeine in a coffee bean is the same whether it’s a medium or dark roast. As the beans are roasted, the chemical composition changes, which changes the aroma and flavour. The caffeine content remains the same, however.

Are Decaffeinated Coffees Free of Caffeine?

The amount of caffeine in decaf coffee can vary depending on the type of coffee and the method used to decaffeinate it. Generally, decaf coffee contains 0-7 mg of caffeine per 8 oz cup.

Tips for Safe and Healthy Caffeine Consumption

If you want to make sure you are consuming a safe and healthy amount of caffeine , there are some tips you can follow. First, it is important to monitor your caffeine intake, and make sure you are not consuming more than 400 milligrams of caffeine per day. Additionally, it is also a good idea to choose your coffee beans and brew method carefully to ensure you are getting the right amount of caffeine . If you are sensitive to caffeine , you should limit your intake or switch to decaffeinated coffee .

In conclusion, the amount of caffeine in your coffee depends on the type of brewing method used. Espresso methods yield the highest concentration of caffeine , but the actual dose of caffeine per serve is lower than other methods due to the smaller serve size. The cafetière method has the highest dose of caffeine per serve. Therefore, it is important to consider the serving size of each method when deciding which brewing method to use.
