Old Brown Java Medium-Dark Roast Coffee offers a bold flavour, characterized by musky and tobacco notes and a vanilla aroma. Perfect for those who appreciate complexity in their coffee, the flavour profile of this Arabica blend is only similar to its Monsoon Malabar counterpart in its spiciness.

What you need to know...

  • Flavours - earthy, musky, spicy, tobacco notes
  • Aroma - vanilla
  • Body - full-bodied
  • Acidity - low

Perfect for...

Espressos and milky drinks such as lattes and cappuccinos.

Old Brown Java, is also known as Old Brown coffee, or Old Government Java. The coffee is grown on the old colonial estates on the east end of Java Island in Indonesia. Old Brown Java was traditionally used as ballast on sailing ships travelling to Europe in the 16th and 17th Centuries, where the sea water gave the coffee a distinct flavour.

Its mild acidity, heavy-bodied taste and sweetness is still attained through a weathering process which can take from 2 to 7 years. The green coffee beans which are milled but not yet roasted are then exposed to the region's moist, warm air throughout the rainy season. The 'monsooning' process results in a strengthening of the coffee's taste, a weakening of the acidity. There is also a distinct colour change from the original green tint of the coffee beans to a light brown colour.

Poor coffee

This coffee was very bad. Bitter, barely drinkable. This was also true of the previous delivery. Which is a shame, as I have previously been happy with redber coffee. However, I have cancelled my subscription and will not buy from them again.

Java Down ?

Had this coffee several times but this one is .... not good. Very bitter rough acid and hard to drink.
Maybe it got mixed up with some building aggregates?
Surely there is some mistake, this coffee should be a warm heavyweight champion impossible to get wrong.
Has the world gone mad ?

Horrible, super bitter with no flavour

I have had Java coffee many times in the past and always loved it. This batch, however, was about the worst coffee I've ever had! I wonder if global warming is destroying the crops?

I'm very happy with all the different coffees available at Redber and I rotate through all of them! I'm happy they are freshly roasted and available to order and collect easily and swiftly!
