Old Brown Java, is also known as Old Brown coffee, or Old Government Java. The coffee is grown on the old colonial estates on the east end of Java Island in Indonesia. Old Brown Java was traditionally used as ballast on sailing ships travelling to Europe in the 16th and 17th Centuries, where the sea water gave the coffee a distinct flavour.

Its mild acidity, heavy-bodied taste and sweetness is still attained through a weathering process which can take from 2 to 7 years. The green coffee beans which are milled but not yet roasted are then exposed to the region's moist, warm air throughout the rainy season. The 'monsooning' process results in a strengthening of the coffee's taste, a weakening of the acidity. There is also a distinct colour change from the original green tint of the coffee beans to a light brown colour.

First coffee purchase

I've been used to buying from Whitards, but thought I'd try someone different as they have raised their delivery cost threshold. Delivery of these items took 8 days, which is too long in my opinion, even taking the petrol issue into account. I received no delivery updates. I'm also not sure the coffee is of the same high grade. I submitted a customer query and received no reply. Overall, I'm unlikely to buy from this site again.

My new go to

I recently decided I was going to start buying nice coffees, and figured I'd shop around a few different brewers as part of that. Then I made the mistake of picking up a bag of Old Brown Java from Redber as my first pick. It's rich, full, smooth, lovely with a splash of oat milk or black on its own, without being hard on an empty stomach, as I tend to only have coffee in the mornings. While I have tried a few other beans, either by choice, or by the lovely sample packs Redber keeps sending me codes for, I've already put a second order in for Old Brown Java, and, starting to see the bottom of that bag peak through, am having a serious discussion with myself over trying something new or picking it up again.
