Different types of espresso machine

An espresso machine is a device used to brew coffee by forcing pressurized water near boiling point through a "puck" of ground coffee and a filter in order to produce a thick, concentrated coffee called espresso. Typically, an espresso coffee machine consists of a boiler, a portafilter (a handle with multiple spouts for holding coffee and allowing for multitasking during coffee brewing), and an adjustable group head that controls the volume of water used for each shot. A commercial coffee grinder is usually placed within reach of the espresso coffee machine.

  • A traditional espresso machine requires a high level of skill and practice to operate, as the barista must manually control the pressure and flow of the water. With this type of machine, once the desired amount of espresso has been extracted, the flow must be manually stopped.
  • A semi-automatic espresso machine is operated using a manual switch that controls the flow and pressure of the water. The barista can still adjust the pressure and flow rate, but the machine does the work of stopping the flow when the desired amount of espresso is extracted.
  • An automatic espresso machine uses electronic sensors and devices to control the flow and pressure of water and shut the flow off once the desired amount of espresso is produced. This machine requires the least amount of skill and experience to operate and produces consistent results.

When we look at an espresso machine in terms of boiler type, there are three different types:

  • Single boiler coffee machines use one boiler to heat up the water and the steam. They are great for small-medium coffee shops that don’t have a huge workload. The main downside to single boiler machines is they may struggle to produce many coffees at peak times depending on the size of the boiler. But if you have a small coffee shop this type of machine could be completely enough for your needs.
  • Dual boiler espresso machine has two separate boilers, one used for brewing and one for steaming the milk. This increases the capacity of the machine in peak times. Dual boiler machines are ideal for coffee shops that serve a lot of milky drinks. Often the steam boiler is much larger than the brew boiler to allow for this.
  • Multi boiler machines are the most powerful and customisable espresso machines on the market. They are equipped with multiple independent, temperature-controlled boilers, giving you complete control over your espresso-making and milk-steaming processes. Multi boiler machines are best suited for professional baristas working in high-volume environments.

Coffee Grinders

Not only is an espresso coffee machine important, but so is the grinder that is used to grind the coffee beans.

Having a quality grinder is essential for making a delicious cup of espresso, as it helps to ensure that the beans are ground to the perfect consistency for extraction.
